The Interior Department moved Monday to bar the filing of new mining claims on nearly 1 million acres near the Grand Canyon for two years.  The notice, which includes a ban on uranium mining claims, covers 633,547 acres under U.S. Bureau of Land Management control, and 360,002 acres in the Kaibab National Forest, Joan Lowy and Felicia Fonseca of the Associated Press report.

A congressional hearing on a bill to set aside more than a million acres of federal lands north and south of the Grand Canyon is set for tomorrow. The mining industry objected to the temporary ban on new claims, while environmentalists applauded the decision.
